At first it didn’t sit right. It still doesn’t.
Buster Posey? Really?
Why did he want to go from the boardroom to the war room, sitting at the head of the table and calling the shots?
Why did the Giants not conduct a search, seeing who’s available before choosing an in-house candidate who has no front office experience?
And why put a franchise icon in this position—a job that almost always ends in failure? Posey ended his playing career on top. He’ll be hard pressed to do that as an executive.
These were the questions swirling around my mind when the news broke Monday morning, and they’re still swirling after Tuesday’s press conference.
This is going to be a high-wire act. Much of it will hinge on Posey choosing the right general manager to learn from and lead all at once.
If he can put the right people around him and build the Giants back up, Posey will burnish his already legendary status in the Bay Area. If this all falls apart, well, it might take a while for the memories of his playing days to kick back in. A lot more Buster Shrugs than Buster Hugs.
I wish I wasn’t skeptical—I do! But I can’t shake the feeling that this is an unnecessary risk for all involved.
