I don’t like uncomfortable conversations. I figure most people don’t.
At the root of them are expectations not met. An agreement not followed through on. A situation that needs to change.
Are the Giants about to have an uncomfortable conversation with Justin Verlander? It would certainly be justified.
The club boldly decided to start him in the first game out of the All-Star break and the 42-year-old responded by not making it out of the third inning. In the second he allowed all four of the Blue Jays’ runs and six of the nine hits on his line. The Giants are now 3-13 in his starts.
The good news for Verlander (0-8, 4.99 ERA) is that the Giants don’t have anyone running to take his job. Top prospect Carson Wisenhunt has a 4.50 ERA and is 16 innings from his career high. Separately, keep in mind Verlander has come out of the bullpen only once in his 20-year career. (ALDS Game 4 in 2017, since you were wondering.)
It’s hard to imagine the uncomfortable conversation is coming soon. But even the thought of the uncomfortable conversation can be uncomfortable enough.
Up next: What, you thought we were going to talk about the Giants getting shutout despite their 11 hits, something that hasn’t happened in 66 years? Ha. Logan Webb (9-6, 2.94 ERA) faces Eric Lauer (4-2, 2.78 ERA) at 12:07 pm in Game 2 of this series.
The elephant in the room is not Verlander. The elephant in the room is the same one I mentioned after G-Man won series vs Red Sox.
