Playing a bad team not only gives you a better chance to win, but a better chance to win completely.
A chance for your unsteady starting rotation to settle itself.
A chance for your slumping hitters to see bloopers find the grass.
A chance for everything that's gone wrong to go right, if only for a few days.
Sure enough, the Giants come out of the Rockies series feeling better than they did going into it. Their starters posted a 2.13 ERA. Struggling hitters got a chance to shine:
• Luis Matos raised his average 41 points.
• LaMonte Wade Jr. had his first multi-hit game in a month.
• Willy Adames hit his first home runs at home in back-to-back at-bats.
The Giants are a third-place team with the record of a first-place team, and that's a good thing as they go to face an actual first-place club. Because they don't need to beat the Cubs completely, they just need to beat them at all.
Up next: The Giants will call Wrigley Field home for the next three days. It’ll be Landen Roupp (2-2, 5.10 ERA) against the best offense in baseball. Hang onto your butts.
