The Giants have whiffed on one superstar pursuit after another. We all know the list by now. Some of those #AlmostGiants will be in the Hall of Fame. But it's hard to say any of them would have been as perfect of a fit as Matt Chapman.
Chapman doesn't have the talent of Shohei Ohtani. But he has everything Ohtani doesn't: An affinity for playing in the Bay Area. Close ties with the manager (sorry, Gabe). A platinum glove on the worst defensive team in baseball last year.
And to boot, he can hit the snot out of the ball like he did Friday night. Chapman isn't the superstar the Giants wanted, he's the player the Giants needed.
Up next: Jordan Hicks makes his much-anticipated Giants debut, facing off against Dylan Cease in his first start with the Padres. First pitch at 4:15 p.m.
