He's still throwing missiles—he just has no idea where they're going. Doval's walking more batters than ever. He's getting hit harder than ever.
When the opponent knows they can wait you out, they will.
Take Thursday night, a scoreless game in the seventh inning. Willy Adames watched a strike before four straight pitches sailed outside the zone. From there, Doval did the work to get Adames home.
The series of unfortunate events spoiled Hayden Birdsong's dominant start and pushed Doval's ERA over five.
You can count me among those ready to close the book on this season. I know you can count Doval, too.
