Camilo Doval's season began with the lights going out and the gates swinging open. The Giants created a one-of-a-kind light show for his appearances—and it's fair to wonder when, or if, we'll see it again.
In a surprising but not shocking move, the Giants sent their All-Star closer to Triple A.
There's a couple layers to peel back on this decision.
From a mechanics perspective, Doval’s walks are up big time this year. He’s struggled to hold runners on and has constantly battled the pitch clock.
From a mindset perspective, he's all but said he doesn't want to pitch unless it's a save situation. And even when he's pitched in those, it's been turbulent.
Still, you wonder why not keep Doval and have him pitch in any inning but the ninth?
The Giants wanted to send Doval a message by demoting him to Sacramento. It's a humbling environment—and a town only big enough for only one light show: The beam.
Up next: The Giants can get a season-high three games over .500, and they have the right guy on the mound for it. It’ll be Logan Webb (9-8, 3.42 ERA) at 1:05 p.m.
