The first benchmark series of the season has come and gone—and it didn't exactly go well.
It's not that the Giants were going to measure up with the Dodgers. But they were going to see how much of a gap stood between themselves and their rivals. After three games, the gap is about 26.5 innings wide.
That's my way of saying the Giants only held a lead for one half inning of the entire series.
The offense tried to play catchup. The pitching tried to hang on—and they will continue to until Blake Snell, Alex Cobb, and Robbie Ray are all in the rotation by midsummer.
But the measuring tape is out now, and it's getting pulled further and further away from the Giants.
Up next: The Giants head back to San Francisco for the home opener, my favorite day of the year. It’ll be Jordan Hicks (1-0, 0.00 ERA) against the Padres and Dylan Cease (0-1, 3.86 ERA) (again!) on Friday at 1:35 p.m. See you at the yard.
