Luck will always have a place in baseball. Ground balls that ricochet off second base, bunts that hug the chalk line, fly balls that get lost in the lights.
But in the age of instant replay, there are fewer and fewer opportunities for luck to play its part. Missed calls aren't the factor they once were.
And yet, sometimes Lady Luck still finds an open seat.
Facing a four-run deficit, J.T. Realmuto had a chance to get the Phillies back into the game. He sent a high fastball soaring down the left field line for a three-run homer ... until it curled foul at the last possible moment. Exhale.
Strike 2.
Three pitches later, with the count full, Realmuto took a slider that spun across the opposite batter's box. He walked to load the bases ... until Patrick Bailey yanked ball four back into the zone.
Strike 3.
It's better to be lucky than good. Is it greedy to be lucky and good?
Up next: Justin Verlander, still looking for his first win as a Giant, faces Jesus Luzardo in Game 2 of this series. First pitch at 3:45 pm.
