The Giants count on Logan Webb for a lot, and he’s delivered in almost every way imaginable. Nobody’s thrown more innings in baseball over the last four years.
But their reliance on Webb crept into dangerous territory before Friday’s game. Landon Roupp landed on the IL with an inflamed elbow, and the Giants' unsteady rotation disintegrated further.
On Friday night though, any decisions about the upcoming starters could wait. Webb was pitching. He turns every five days into the baseball equivalent of a Sunday drive: easy, carefree, and usually without traffic. Usually.
That wasn't what happened Friday. Webb allowed six runs on eight hits, soaking up four innings when I’m sure Bob Melvin was hoping for double that.
The Giants navigated the remaining five frames, burning through relievers and finishing the night with a lot more questions than answers, including: How many more days until Webb can pitch again?
Up next: Robbie Ray (9-4, 2.92 ERA) is the only other certainty in the rotation right now. He starts against David Peterson (6-4, 2.90) at 6:05 pm.
