Christmas came early for the Giants. So did Hanukkah. And your birthday.
Roll them all into one mega gift-giving day, and you begin to approach an occasion worthy of unwrapping Rafael Devers. The Giants should, in theory, be satisfied. You should, in theory, be satisfied.
But like a dejected kid who ripped open a box of clothes when he wanted a toy, can I be left wanting a little bit more?
Just look at second base. You probably already felt a pull toward it because it’s just a black hole. Giants second baseman have the second worst OPS in the National League. Friday night was the perfect encapsulation.
Christian Koss batted twice with the bases loaded and no outs. Twice he hit into a run-scoring (!) double play. He topped off his night with an error that scored the go-ahead run. Tyler Fitzgerald hasn't been much better. He's hitting .237 and has fallen off sharply since April, and even further from his powerful second half last year.
In reality, second base is just one of several leaks in the Giants offense. But their options right now aren't cutting it, so would it be too greedy to ask for another gift? Maybe one shaped like Freddy Sanchez?
I won't ask for anything else until at least next week.
Up next: The Devers revenge series rolls on. It’ll be Brayan Bello (3-1, 3.49 ERA) against Landon Roupp (4-5, 3.99 ERA). First pitch at 1:05 pm.
