Robbie Ray had the best 107 seconds of his baseball life on Tuesday night.
He dominated for much of his 6 1/3 innings against the White Sox—but he reached a new level in the sixth.
Ray threw six pitches. He threw six strikes.
Two to Lenyn Sosa—groundout. One to Luis Robert—fly out. And three to Andrew Benintendi, striking him out to put an exclamation point at the end of a half inning that didn't last as long as a commercial break.
As brief as the performance was, I wondered: Is Robbie Ray really this good? Are the White Sox really this bad? What happens when every starting pitcher has to reach the sixth inning?
Ray had no issues reaching the mark and racing right by it. He conducted baseball's version of a two-minute drill, and it was beautiful.
Up next: The Giants go for the sweep and have the right guy on the mound to do it. It’ll be Logan Webb (11-8, 3.17 ERA) against Garret Crochet (6-9, 3.61 ERA) for some afternoon baseball at 12:45 p.m.
