Bruce Bochy liked to talk about putting on your big boy pants when times got tough. Buster Posey finally had to.
With his club salting away its hot start to the season, Posey responded.
He cut his former teammate, LaMonte Wade Jr., and backup catcher Sam Huff. He also sent Christian Koss, a surprise addition to the opening day roster, to Sacramento. The replacements came in the form of outfielder Daniel Johnson, first baseman Dominic Smith, and catcher Andrew Knizner.
Posey's team responded right back to him with its gutsiest win of the year. Down 5-0 to the Padres—having not scored five runs in almost three weeks—the Giants scored six unanswered.
Johnson, whose name makes him seem like he teleported out of MLB The Show, led the way with two hits and a steal. He then made a terrific catch in the ninth before Bob Melvin yanked Ryan Walker, staving off yet another meltdown.
From Posey to Melvin to Johnson, everyone put on their pants Wednesday. And really, that's all you can ask for.
Up next: The Giants will try to escape with a series split Thursday afternoon. It’ll be Dylan Cease (1-4, 4.66 ERA) against Robbie Ray (7-1, 2.43 ERA) at 12:45 pm.
