Catchers can't get saves. But that doesn't mean it should be that way. Ask anyone who watched what Patrick Bailey did on Tuesday night.
The rookie catcher entered the game in the eighth inning and promptly threw out a would-be base stealer from his knees. Then in the ninth, with All-Star closer Camilo Doval unavailable, Bailey saved the game himself.
On a 1-1 pitch to Christian Walker, with the Giants one out from a 4-3 win, Bailey threw behind the runner at first and picked him off to end the game.
It was a stunning play in every way.
On a deadline day the Giants decided they had everything—and everyone—they needed, Patrick Bailey made it seem that way. We'll see about today.
Up next: Logan Webb (8-9, 3.49 ERA) faces Slade Cecconi, who’s making his major league debut. He has a 6.38 ERA in Triple A this year. Good luck to the Giants. First pitch at 6:45 p.m.
