Farhan Zaidi jumped on KNBR after Thursday's loss and was asked about expectations at the trade deadline. He sent a message to straight to the clubhouse: Start winning, or else.
“Overall it’s been a real disappointment. I think we pushed a lot of chips in with this team. … We need the players to show us what the right direction is for us. … If we keep playing the way we did for the last five days, we're going to have to think about selling and seeing some younger players.”
It's as clear a directive as he's ever offered mid-season—and even then, it's not that clear. What exactly is Zaidi telegraphing here?
He's ticked. I think ownership's directive to him over the winter was: Sign some guys, or else. So he did, and where has it gotten him? To a worse point than they were at last season.
That leaves Zaidi to sound the alarm now, even if the Giants are only three games out of a playoff spot. Over 50,000 watts he spoke to every struggling player and soon-to-be free agent: Get it together, or else.
Up next: The first-place Twins come to town. It’ll be a couple of local kids on the mound: (Joe Ryan 6-5, 3.29 ERA) vs. Kyle Harrison (4-4, 4.24 ERA) at 7:15 p.m.
