The last game of the first half embodied so much of the previous 96 that led up to it.
The Giants surprised you, staging yet another multi-run comeback with Luis Matos's home run in the ninth.
The Giants delighted you, delivering the kind of pitching performance (through 10 innings, at least) that's come to define this team.
The Giants tortured you, going 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position and botching a chance to win it in the 10th.
Wrap it all up and you have a 52-45 team sitting a half-game out of the playoffs. I'd have taken that on Opening Day. I think you would have, too. But I'll allow for a little longing.
It's hard not to feel like the Giants shouldn't be in a better position given the number of close games they've played in. Only the Pirates have played in more one-run games, yet nobody's won more of those contests than the Giants. Night after night, every game stays within reach through the late innings.
Chalk it up to a great bullpen, a muted offense, whatever you want. But I promise you these final 65 games are going to be surprising, delightful, and torturous.
That's all we could ask for, right?
MLB Draft: In the minutes after losing to the Dodgers, the Giants selected infielder Gavin Kilen out of Tennessee with the 13th overall pick. Word is he’s a contact hitter with questionable power. I say he’ll fit right in.
Up next: The Giants don’t play again until Friday, when they begin the second half in Toronto. Logan Webb said he expects to pitch early in Tuesday’s All-Star Game.
Look out for a podcast this week. Kerry and I will look back at the season so far and preview what’s to come. Here’s our last episode, if you haven’t had the chance to listen.
1-Run Games:
Giants: 22-17, .564; Padres: 21-14, .600 (including 5 wins with 1-0 score). Giants should have more wins with 2 Cy Young candidates. Melvin whined before the Dodgers series that Miller is on the IL. Giants have the healthiest pitchers in NLW and it’s not even close. Stop whining
