Kinda NOT great, Bob. Three sloppy issues in Pirates series which has plagued them in series losses. Amazing how sloppiness is ignored in series wins. In the Mets series win, a Mets announcer said the Giants were “waving the white flag” when they didn’t bring the infield in, run scores. Brutal, but true. Who is to blame? Melvin and his coaches? Chapman and Adames, the clubhouse leaders, who should be quarterbacking the infield? Both? Too many mental mistakes but Giants win back to back series so we’ll excuse them or else we’ll be “nitpicking.” When Jon Miller raised some of these issues last year Baggs scolded an Athletic subscriber for mentioning Miller’s pregame interview with Melvin. Baggs forgave Melvin for being testy with the HoF announcer saying it’s unfair to “nitpick” Melvin after winning a must win game. BS

NOT trying to be mean to you. You’re super smart, but the underlying issues with the Giants is what I noted here after the series win vs Red Sox. Called it elephant in the room. Baggs said he was on sabbatical so he can’t properly evaluate team and doesn’t understand collapse. Yet Baggs was present @ Red Sox series win, Braves home sweep, Rockies series win = common theme: mental mistakes from manager, coaches, veterans and young players.

I think about this comment a lot from a NY fan who recently moved to the Bay Area on the Athletic. To paraphrase, Giants fans don’t watch other teams much.

Bay Area beat writers, fans are passionate and smart but to fully understand the game it’s super helpful to observe how other teams, writers see the same game or non-Giants games. Our announcers are the best, but on big plays, I look up how the other team called it. The same Mets announcer who said Giants were waving the white flag, recently said the Mets have been playing .500 baseball since May 1. I looked it up and he’s correct: 42-42. Maybe we’re a mediocre team, he said. OOF. None of that was noticed from Bay Area media, fans, who proclaimed the Mets one of the best teams.

When Alonso stole a bag in the 2024 postseason, that same Mets announcer said he told Pete how impressed he was. Alonso said credit goes to Antoan Richardson, who told him the bag is wide open, take it, so I did. I looked up Alonso’s sprint speed: 12.

Only Doval got the microscopic scrutiny from beat writers, especially Baggs (who is a beautiful writer) in wins/losses. Fan of Doval and Webb. Holding runners on? Team wide problem H1 2024, including Webb, who was one of the worst SP, along with Corbin Burnes. When Pagés, one of the slowest, stole a bag it woke up Logan and Melvin. Logan texted Craw who said he needed to vary his timing. That’s a red flag. So Melvin and his veteran coaching staff never noticed Logan needed to vary his timing but the Cardinals staff did?! Finally, it was the Braves announcers who mentioned last year that the Giants seem to have the most pitchcom issues. Since Bay Area media only regularly mentioned Doval’s pitchcom problems somehow loyal fans seemed to miss it was happening a lot with Giants pitchers not named Doval.

This weekend is interesting: if Giants sweep Nats and Dodgers, Padres and Mets are swept, Giants could have a chance of seizing momentum and be the 2024 Tigers. Baseball is weird so anything can happen. That’s why we love the game
