When you're watching a game, you can always know what's happening. The score, the runners, the count, it's all there.
Even if you don't know what the mishmash of big numbers, small numbers, and yellow squares mean, it's all there for you.
It's easy to take our awareness for granted, because you know who doesn't get to see all this stuff in one place? The guys on the field. And it makes Matt Chapman all the more impressive.
On Sunday he turned a double play when he shouldn’t have been able to.
With runners on second and third, he fielded a grounder he could have routinely thrown to first. Instead he charged the ball and allowed his momentum to take him into the basepath, on a collision course with the runner trucking to third.
In seven rapid-fire steps he drove the runner out of the baseline—out no. 1—and slung it over to first in time for a double play you never saw coming. And I don’t think the yellow squares did, either.
Up next: The Giants head to Houston to finish out their season-opening road trip. Jordan Hicks will make his 2025 debut against Ronel Blanco, who threw a no-hitter last year. First pitch at 5:10 pm.
