The Rockies are a disaster—but you already knew that. You won't be surprised to hear their starting pitchers have the worst ERA in the National League.
You may be surprised to hear the team behind them is the Giants.
Just over the last two days, Robbie Ray and Jordan Hicks combined to allow five walks, six hits, and seven runs ... in the first inning. Hicks somehow managed six shutout innings after his opening disaster on Thursday, but his ERA still sits above six. Justin Verlander's is closer to seven.
Safe to say, this wasn't what anyone expected. The rotation was supposed to protect a suspect offense, not the other way around. Never mind the bullpen's sub-2 ERA is bailing everyone out.
So what are they going to do about this mess? Probably nothing. Buster Posey's Giants are out of the gimmick business. No openers. No six-man rotations. They're going to ride these veterans for a while, ERAs be damned.
At least they can hide behind the Rockies.
Up next: The Giants close out this lengthy road trip in Anaheim. It’ll be Logan Webb against Tyler Anderson at 6:38 pm. Jorge Soler revenge series on tap.
🎧 Next episode of Giants Postcards will hit your inbox Sunday morning. In the meantime, you can catch my conversation with Marty Lurie (and friends!) on Thursday night. Marty told me to skip my senior year at Syracuse to keep covering the Giants. He may have been right.
