The news could not have been timed any worse. Amid the Giants' worst stretch of the season, the club announced that they picked up Bob Melvin’s contract option for 2026.
To anyone clamoring for change, be it the manager, hitting coach, or bat boy, Buster Posey sent a clear message: STFU.
Here's what he actually said: "...I believe we have great players, and I still believe in that group of players, but it boils down to them needing to play better baseball."
He's not wrong. Melvin didn't throw 10 straight balls to start an inning before giving up a three-run homer. Melvin didn't go hitless from the fourth inning to the ninth. Melvin didn't drop strike three and immediately allow a two-run bomb.
But his team did all of those things Tuesday night, and they're increasingly hard to watch. Maybe 2026 will be better.
Up next: Landon Roupp (6-5, 3.43 ERA) faces archenemies Merrill Kelly (7-4, 3.49 ERA) at 6:40 pm. The Giants will try to score more runs than the other team.
