The Giants played 884 innings leading up to the All Star break. It took them only nine on Sunday to provide a Spark Notes version of the season.
For the first six innings we were on Perfect Game Watch. Blake Snell showed the kind of stuff that made you think unreasonably: If he could just do this 10 or 11 more times…
Then a splash of reality. The 2-0 lead disappeared with two outs to go. Camilo Doval blew the save and it’s a wonder you ever let this team trick you into thinking they could contend.
And in the final act, the Giants won in the most Giants way possible. Mike Yastrzemski circled the bases on a Little League homer. He sent everyone home happy, confused, and wondering if the playoffs are actually within reach.
The Giants have about 592 innings to answer that question—hopefully with a little less whiplash than the first 884.
Up next: The Home Run Derby is tonight. The Giants haven’t had a participant in 20 years (!), and I bet you know who it was. Spend a few minutes watching Barry Bonds and Hideki Matsui compete in their own derby in Japan.
The season resumes again on Friday in Denver. In the meantime read up on James Tibbs III, the Giants’ first-round pick out of Florida State. The last kid they drafted out of FSU, Gerald Posey, turned out all right.
Quickly: Thanks for reading. I hope you enjoy following the Giants through the lens of these postcards. If there’s anyone in your life who you think would also enjoy these, forward this email or send them to giantspostcards.com. Enjoy the break.
Love reading these every morning. Cheers to a strong 2nd half.
