People know the rule because of the Giants—because of Buster Posey.
To prevent collisions at home plate, the catcher can't block home plate. Apparently, that's what Gary Sanchez did against the Giants Wednesday night.
Blake Sabol was easily thrown out at home to end the fifth inning. Then the Giants challenged—and won.
In that moment they won not only the challenge, but the game. What would have been the third out of the inning turned into the Giants' second run, and then they scored twice more with their extra life.
Did Sanchez block the plate, or at least Sabol's path to it? Sure.
But Sabol was going to be out by a mile no matter where Sanchez stood. Calling this a run...
...is not in the spirit of the rule.
Up next: The Giants are going for 11 wins in a row. It’ll be Alex Wood (2-1, 4.11 ERA) against Blake Snell (3-6, 3.48 ERA) at 12:45 p.m.
