With nobody out in the eighth inning, Kiké Hernandez sent a soaring fly ball to left center. Lucky for the Giants, they had two players making a mad dash for it. Heliot Ramos broke from center and Luis Matos from left.
They were in lockstep, heading straight for each other and the ball's landing spot. Then they looked at each other.
That split second of "I got it. You catch it" as Mike Krukow likes to say, was all it took for the ball, and the whole game, to crash down. Two players within arm's reach of the ball. Neither caught it.
Good teams don't let plays like this define a season, or even a game. But as for the Giants, well, you knew in the moment exactly what this play was: defining.
Up next: Jordan Hicks (4-6, 3.79 ERA) squares off with Landon Knack (1-2, 3.23 ERA). After a really strong start to the season, Hicks has an ERA over six in his last eight starts. First pitch at 7:10 p.m.
