The Giants steadiest pitcher unraveled fast.
After his teammates took six innings to scratch across a run and tie the game, Logan Webb gave the lead, and the game, away in seven pitches.
Six of those went to Gavin Sheets and Jake Cronenworth, who teamed up to break the tie. And then you had to crack a wry smile on the seventh.
Because on a Padres team souped up with star power, it was new catcher Freddy Fermin who broke Webb and the Giants on Monday night. He cracked a two-run homer, his first with San Diego, to cap off the Padres' frenetic two-minute drill and cement the Giants' 11th home loss in 12 games. It's a skid they haven't gone on in 32 years.
So maybe it was Webb who unraveled fast, but he’s only following the lead of his teammates.
Up next: The Giants have to face a left-hander Tuesday night, so, um, you know what that means. It’ll be Nestor Cortes (0-0, 3.86 ERA) against Robbie Ray (9-5, 2.85 ERA) at 6:45 pm.
