🎧 Podcast: Should the Giants regret their trade deadline deals? Kerry and I discuss on Apple, Spotify, and everywhere else.
The Giants are in a familiar and forgettable time of year. Late September, long shot for the playoffs, playing out the string. This has been their existence for eight of the last nine years.
What saves me at this point in the season is a distraction. It comes once a week, Sunday afternoons, when the 49ers come on.
The 49ers are far from perfect but at this point in the calendar they've got something the Giants lack: Hope.
That hope keeps my eyes glued to their game and completely oblivious of the Other One. I couldn’t tell you what led Trevor McDonald to throw six innings of one-run ball in his first major league start on Sunday. The game summary tells me the Giants tied the game with three straight hits and took the lead on a bases-loaded walk.
It’s been four years since I turned on the Giants during a 49ers game. Every season it's as if they're determined to end it the same way it started, with meaningless exhibitions. Spring training gives way to September tryouts.
Around 6:30 my phone buzzed with an ESPN alert. I glanced at it to discover the Giants won. Then I got back to the 49ers game, wondering what I’d missed.
Up next: The Giants head back to San Francisco for the final homestand of the year. They have the Cardinals for three, starting Monday night at 6:45 pm.
