I'm confused about a few things right now.
• The Giants swept one road series in 2024. Naturally it took them one week to equal that mark.
• Babe Wilmer struck again. He hit his fourth home run in six games. Last year it took him 52 games to hit four homers.
• Lamonte Wade, the Giants' OBP machine, hasn't taken a walk in six games. That didn't happen to him last year until July. The man makes a living getting on base, and he's 1 for 17 with a home run and no walks.
• I'm still trying to figure out the Giants offense. They've had games with 16 and 17 strikeouts—and won both. So I'm sure you can imagine how many times they struck out in their only loss of the year: Once.
• The biggest difference from last year is completely unsustainable. The Giants are hitting .308 with runners in scoring position, third best in all of baseball. Last year they were dismal in those situations (.234) and it led to a lot of agonizing games. It’s been a good week…
• Except in the standings. Don’t look. You probably shouldn't look until July, anyway. The Dodgers were going to lose for the first time, and then they didn't. Shohei Ohtani hit a walk-off shot on his bobblehead night. The Padres also haven’t lost.
The Giants are in third place with a better record than the entire American League. What does it mean? It means it’s April 3.
Up next: The Giants are off today before the home opener on Friday afternoon. I’ll be there, and I can’t wait. It’ll be Justin Verlander against Bryce Miller and the Mariners at 1:35 pm.
