With the Giants reaching an inflection point in their season, they called up infielder David Villar to debut on Monday. The 25-year-old infielder had torn up Triple A, with 21 homers and a 1.043 OPS across 66 games.
The Giants needed a jolt. Villar provided one. They still lost.
Villar finished his debut 2-for-4 and came within a couple feet of history. He blasted the first pitch of his first at-bat halfway up the wall in right-center, narrowly missing out on becoming the 32nd player in history to homer on the first pitch of his career.
He'll stick around.
