The Giants did what they had to do. A four-game sweep of the Rockies perfectly sets up an uncomfortable trade deadline for Farhan Zaidi:
Buy, and defend investing in a team with less than a 20% chance to make the playoffs.
Sell, and admit your all-in plan failed.
Do nothing, and watch the discussion about your job security spin out of control.
No good options, no obvious options. Here's how I'd rank the Giants' trade candidates if they stay pragmatic and sell:
Michael Conforto: The Giants won't hesitate if someone else wants him.
Blake Snell: If he keeps pitching like this, he's going to opt out. Why not capitalize?
Taylor Rogers: The Giants aren't giving him opportunities to pitch in big spots. Certainly someone else would.
Mike Yastrzemski: With an OPS over .900 this month, he's making a trade harder to figure out.
Camilo Doval: He'd fetch the biggest return but you'd still be selling low. Maybe the Orioles would overpay?
It’ll all be sorted out soon enough. The trade deadline is Tuesday at 3 p.m. PT.
Up next: The Giants don’t play again until after the deadline passes. Robbie Ray (1-0, 1.80 ERA) will start at home against JP Sears (7-8, 4.81 ERA) and the A’s. First pitch at 6:45 p.m.
