Matt Chapman is here to stay. He signed a six-year, $151 million extension on Thursday. Let's break it down.
Pro: The Giants signed a well-known player who wanted to play in San Francisco. That's a win for a team known more for the players who didn't want to play for it.
Con: The last half of the deal covers Chapman's age 35, 36, and 37 seasons. No opt outs. No-trade clause. Nowhere to hide.
Pro: It took five years but Farhan Zaidi is finally following through on his commitment to make the Giants "more athletic." Chapman's defense and base running have been a thrill to watch.
Con: Chapman is miscast as a cleanup hitter on the current roster. It'll take more than just one guy (Soto, Juan) to get him where he belongs, as a No. 6 or 7 hitter.
Pro: Giants fans have a jersey to buy and a player they can count on seeing play everyday. It's amazing that this is even notable.
Con? Pro? Ownership wouldn't let Zaidi make this move unless they were sure about him returning in 2025, right? I don't think it's an absolute certainty. But it's close. Whether or not he should return, well, we're out of room in this postcard.
Up next: The Padres are hanging onto the first wild card spot as they come to town for three. Mason Black (0-2, 7.45 ERA) will make his fifth career start Friday night. First pitch at 6:40 p.m.
