The Marlins are anonymous. They're made up of guys like Nick Fortes, Liam Hicks, and Agustín Ramírez, and as you might expect, they're one of the worst teams in baseball.
But there's something in common with that trio. Take a moment to guess. Ready?
Those three guys are all catchers on the Marlins' roster. And they’re all hitting better than Patrick Bailey.
Tuesday night's loss didn't come down to the starting catcher. The Giants didn't get a hit after the fifth inning. But with every passing 0-fer, Bailey's reliance on his glove to keep him in the lineup only grows.
He's hitting .188 with one home run and a .522 OPS. Whatever player Bailey showed up as during his first 40 games—when he hit .293 with an .817 OPS—that's just not who he is. Want him to stop switch-hitting? Well, he's batting .178 vs. lefties and .191 against righties this year. It's all been bad.
And for as much recognition as he deserves for his Gold Glove, I bet the Giants wish Patrick Bailey had a little more Liam Hicks in his game.
Up next: The Giants will try to win a ballgame against Edward Cabrera (2-2, 3.81 ERA). He’s already thrown 5 2/3 innings of shutout ball against the Giants earlier this year. Luckily, the home team will counter with Logan Webb (7-5, 2.49 ERA). First pitch at 6:45 pm.
