The Giants played a game Sunday morning deserving to be hidden on the Roku Channel.
What's that? You didn't know the Giants and Rangers were playing MLB's weekly Sunday morning game on the Roku Channel? Exactly.
Two things can be true:
1. Millions of people are canceling their cable subscriptions and signing up for streaming.
2. Putting games exclusively on streaming services is bad for fans. Putting games on obscure streaming services—even if they're free—is even worse.
People just want to watch the game.
As the NFL and NBA cut deals with Amazon, Netflix, and NBC to put games on those streaming services, MLB is getting into business with ... Roku? For $10 million per year? Is that really worth the wrath of two fan bases every Sunday morning? Apparently.
One day we'll reach MLB streaming nirvana: Every game available on one platform without blackouts.
In the meantime, I'll be looking for the Roku Channel.
Up next: The Giants head back home to meet the Astros. It’ll be Kyle Harrison (4-3, 4.18 ERA), with a 5.88 ERA over his last five starts, facing Spencer Arrighetti (3-5, 5.79 ERA). You’ll be happy to know the game will be on NBC Sports Bay Area at 6:45 p.m.
Let’s go Gigantes! if we can just makeit to the All Star break, we might get Cobb or Ray back. Maybe Farhan will gift us a surprise slugger and we can make a wild card run?!
