With the game not completely out of reach, Brandon Nimmo shot a 108 mph bullet on the ground.
It skidded up the middle, right to shortstop Thairo Estrada. But Estrada, one of the Giants' most reliable players, inexplicably stepped the wrong way.
He shuffled to his left. The ball went to his right. An innocent mistake with two outs and no one on base.
But then, as Mets announcer Gary Cohen said, the Mets "turned (Sean) Hjelle into marmalade."
The next five batters reached. In a blink, the Giants' ninth-inning deficit went from four runs to seven.
On this team, there are no innocent mistakes.
Up next: The Giants are going to be tested with another lefty. This time David Peterson takes the mound for New York, facing Logan Webb, who’s 0-4 with a 4.94 ERA. The facts are ugly right now. First pitch at 1:05 p.m.
