The point at which the Matt Chapmans took a seat in favor of the Casey Schmitts. So, what now?</p><p>Apparently, it&#8217;s Bryce Eldridge time. No pressure, kid. Jes&#250;s Rodr&#237;guez, who the Giants received for Camilo Doval, is also <a href="https://www.sfchronicle.com/sports/giants/article/s-f-giants-promoting-bryce-eldridge-jesus-22239436.php">reportedly</a> joining the team.</p><p>The Giants&#8217; complicated (losing) dynamic is about to get even more complex. (I&#8217;m skeptical too.) Casey Schmitt and Luis Arraez have been the team&#8217;s best hitters, so let&#8217;s assume they stay in the lineup. </p><p>Are we staring at a situation where Willy Adames, Matt Chapman, and Rafael Devers are about to have their playing time cut? He hit under .200 across May and June. </p><p>So it&#8217;s with healthy skepticism I look back at his last two weeks&#8212;he&#8217;s batting .439 with a 1.133 OPS&#8212;and wonder how real it is. Lee&#8217;s next dribbler to second base can&#8217;t be far, right?</p><p>For now, it&#8217;s hypnotizing to watch him at the plate. He has complete control of the bat. He&#8217;s pulling inside pitches, shooting outside ones the other way, and driving balls over the middle of the plate. Max Meyer tried to groove his first pitch of the game and Lee crushed it into Triple&#8217;s Alley.</p><p>He went 4 for 5 <a href="https://www.mlb.com/gameday/marlins-vs-giants/2026/04/26/823230/final/box">Sunday afternoon</a>, his sixth multi-hit game in the last 10 days. (Judge has only had four such games all season.)</p><p>Still, after 215 career games, I don&#8217;t think we don&#8217;t have a read on who Lee is as a hitter. Consistently inconsistent? The Sultan of Spring? The 4-3 King?</p><p>I&#8217;ll let you know in a year.</p><p><strong>Up next: </strong>The Giants are off Monday before beginning an East Coast road trip through Philadelphia and Tampa Bay. It had the right ingredients.</p><p><strong>You had Landen Roupp continuing a coming out party that started last summer.</strong> He held the Reds hitless through five innings. If only for a half inning, they looked like a winning ballclub. </p><p><strong>You had a team ready to be the aggressor.</strong> Roupp drilled Spencer Steer a night after the Reds infielder barked at JT Brubaker. Then Erik Miller struck out Sal Stuart, who hit three times as many home runs as the Giants did this series, and told him to sit the f&#8212; down. Benches cleared. Players yelled, pointed, and shoved. You&#8217;re gonna make me challenge two straight pitches?</em></p><p><strong>Diaz:</strong> <em>I dare you.</em></p><p>The moment came and went quietly. Arraez didn&#8217;t challenge and flied out two pitches later. But you saw the invisible effects of the system on display. </p><p>It tests the relationship between players and umpires. Just because you can show an umpire every time he&#8217;s wrong doesn&#8217;t mean you should. He&#8217;s going to be there when you&#8217;re out of challenges, too.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!UoMf!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fe5a3f4e7-2236-4a44-b7bb-9be145898ae8_544x260.gif" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!UoMf!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_lossy/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fe5a3f4e7-2236-4a44-b7bb-9be145898ae8_544x260.gif 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!UoMf!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_lossy/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fe5a3f4e7-2236-4a44-b7bb-9be145898ae8_544x260.gif 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!UoMf!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_lossy/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fe5a3f4e7-2236-4a44-b7bb-9be145898ae8_544x260.gif 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!UoMf!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_lossy/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fe5a3f4e7-2236-4a44-b7bb-9be145898ae8_544x260.gif 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!UoMf!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_lossy/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fe5a3f4e7-2236-4a44-b7bb-9be145898ae8_544x260.gif" width="727" height="347.4632352941176" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/e5a3f4e7-2236-4a44-b7bb-9be145898ae8_544x260.gif&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:260,&quot;width&quot;:544,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:727,&quot;bytes&quot;:7104855,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/gif&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://www.giantspostcards.com/i/193863967?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fe5a3f4e7-2236-4a44-b7bb-9be145898ae8_544x260.gif&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!UoMf!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_lossy/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fe5a3f4e7-2236-4a44-b7bb-9be145898ae8_544x260.gif 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!UoMf!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_lossy/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fe5a3f4e7-2236-4a44-b7bb-9be145898ae8_544x260.gif 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!UoMf!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_lossy/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fe5a3f4e7-2236-4a44-b7bb-9be145898ae8_544x260.gif 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!UoMf!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_lossy/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fe5a3f4e7-2236-4a44-b7bb-9be145898ae8_544x260.gif 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg role="img" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><title></title><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p><strong>Up next: </strong>The Giants go for the series win with their ace on the mound. Where he sends one beyond the bay and into orbit with Artemis II. </p><p>Maybe that feeling will wear off as the next eight years of his contract play out. For now, it remains. And he finally met the moment <a href="https://www.mlb.com/gameday/phillies-vs-giants/2026/04/08/823234/final/summary/highlights">Wednesday afternoon</a>.</p><p>Another rally was about to fizzle out, sending a scoreless game into the seventh. Disappointment lingered over Matt Chapman&#8217;s walk turning into a strikeout after an ABS challenge.</p><p>It didn&#8217;t linger long. Devers demolished the first-pitch fastball, planting a three-run homer into the garden beyond center field.</p><p>If it felt like a breakthrough swing of the bat, that&#8217;s because it was. It was Devers&#8217; first go-ahead homer in the sixth inning or later with the Giants.</p><p>He&#8217;s started the season slow, and really, his numbers since joining the Giants are underwhelming. His first two hits on <a href="https://www.mlb.com/gameday/phillies-vs-giants/2026/04/07/823235/final/wrap">Tuesday</a> made him the first player since 1960 to start his career 5 for 5.
